New Motto, Familiar Theme: Republicans Decide They’ll Pitch a Plan for Change, Too
By Edward Epstein, CQ Staff
Newt Gingrich had his “Contract With America’’ in 1994.
Nancy Pelosi used her “Six for ’06” pitch to win the 2006 elections.
And now John A. Boehner and his House Republicans have a plan for 2008 — a platform that will be rolled out in installments, beginning Wednesday, with a carefully researched message intended to tap into the current voter mood.
Their motto will be “Change You Deserve.”
Under that banner, House Republicans plan to offer a series of ideas for health care, the economy, energy and security.
GOP leaders developed the platform over the past year, using focus groups to test its appeal and, more recently, consulting with Sen. John McCain , R-Ariz., to be sure it didn’t stray too far from McCain’s presidential proposals.
With both Democratic contenders for the presidency stressing messages of change, Boehner, R-Ohio, has challenged his members to help get the public to view the GOP as a vehicle for new ideas.
But Boehner spokesman Michael Steel admitted it is a work in progress. “It’s a goal that we can be viewed as agents of change,’’ he said.

Wow! Gay Americans certainly deserve equality for a change, so I guess this new slogan means we can count on the Republicans to pass employment non-discrimination and hate-crimes laws, end "Don't Ask/Don't Tell," and get rid of their odious Defense of Marriage Act. Thanks, GOP!
We are all living through the "direction" Repugnants want to move this country. What wonderful choices they have given us. Should I pay for gas or food? Should I go to the doctor with my shrinking paycheck or use it to stop the foreclosure for 1 more month? They scream agout increasing entitlement programs but are more than willing to dump 1 trillion dollars into their private never ending; unwinnable Iraq war. Thanks Repugnants, I already have the change I deserve for not rising up and removing your party by force years ago.
Once we're done with you, all you'll have left: change.
the slogan is illegal. It is the registered advertising slogan of the anti-anxiety drug effexor xr. Notwithstanding that, why didn't the republicans effectuate the change they wanted when they controlled the congress? How disingenuous!
The slogan is the same as the registered advertising slogan of the anti-anxiety drug Effexor XR. How original ! Notwithstanding this, the Republicans are being disingenuous, because they could have effectuated any change they wanted to back when they fully controlled Congress.
And after 7+ years of having our rights stepped on, screwed by corporations and lied to just so shrubie could beat his chest, we are suppose to believe this?? I think not. Just more lies, so they continue what shrubie started.
"Should I pay for gas or food? Should I go to the doctor with my shrinking paycheck or use it to stop the foreclosure for 1 more month?" Hmmm, all this occurred while Democrats controlled both Congress and Senate. Enjoy your socialized compartmentalized future where the gov't decides what you need and how you will get it. As for adopting change, forget it. How about going back to the core principle values and voting like it as well.
Congress is just as bad at taking oil money for their races as the Senate. Obama does it through a Pac and Hillary just takes it up front. We need to be rid of all of them and start a new United States
Wow, the GOP must have a very low opinion of Americans to think they deserve more of their policies. I may disagree with the American people on some issues, but, even if they vote for McCain, I still don't think they deserve that. No one does.
