From the Stadium Floor: Nevada Revels in its Own Power
By Marie Horrigan, CQ Staff
With its status as a key battleground state and possibilities for Democratic pick-ups in the House, delegates from Nevada scored prime seats on the floor of Invesco Field where delegates argued Obama could win the state and Democrats could take a clean sweep of all three congressional seats.
Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley , the only House member in the state not facing a competitive race, predicted the enthusiasm demonstrated at the stadium indicated Obama could win Nevada.
“I’ve never seen anything like this, I can’t imagine anybody else attracting such a remarkable crowd,” she said.
Berkley mentioned, coincidentally, that the Democratic challengers for the two other Nevada House seats, Jill Derby and Dina Titus, were bridesmaids in her wedding.
Rory Reid, commissioner of Clark County, Nev., and son of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid , also said the stadium venue indicated an unprecedented level of excitement.
“It’s what Senator Obama said yesterday. It’s not a bunch of party contributors and party regulars. This is the people coming out to support someone they think is going to change the world,” he said.
Reid said he thought Obama would be able to pull off a close win in the key battleground state, pointing to Democrats’ new advantage in voter registration as a key factor. Clark County is by far the most populous in the state.
He said that Obama also had the advantage in terms of his philosophy over presumed Republican presidential candidate John McCain ranging from Yucca Mountain to regulating industry. “I think that whatever your perspective, if you’re a Nevada resident and you’re more concerned about national issues they favor Senator Obama right now or on local issues we have an advantage and we have a demographic advantage. So I think if we show up we should win,” Reid said.
CQ Politics rates the presidential race in Nevada No Clear Favorite, our most competitive category.
