McCain’s Pick of Alaska Gov. Palin Assures 2008 Election Will Be Historic
By Jonathan Allen, CQ Staff
John McCain named little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin , who has a reputation for pursuing reform, as his vice presidential running mate Friday. Palin will be the first Republican woman — and the second woman from a major party — to appear on a national ticket.
His choice guarantees that voters will make history this November, electing either the first African-American president or the first woman vice president.
In introducing his running mate at a campaign rally in Dayton, Ohio, shortly after midday, McCain emphasized Palin’s image as a reformer.
“I found someone with an outstanding reputation for standing up to special interests and entrenched bureaucracies; someone who has fought against corruption and the failed policies of the past,” McCain said. “She stands up for what’s right and she doesn’t let anyone tell her to sit down.”
Despite a reputation for reform built on the enactment of a new state ethics law, her opposition to fellow Republicans who have been tarnished by scandal and the decision to halt the state’s notorious “Bridge to Nowhere,” Palin is currently under investigation in a probe of whether she improperly pressured a state official to fire her former brother-in-law from his job as a state trooper.
Palin, 44, is a former beauty queen and the mother of five children, including a son who is scheduled to deploy to Iraq with his Army unit and a son born in April who suffers from Down Syndrome. She has a crib in her office for the days she takes the baby to work, and describes herself as a “hockey mom.”
“Politics isn’t just a game of competing interests and clashing parties. The people of America expect us to seek public office and to serve for the right reasons,” Palin told a cheering crowd. “And the right reason is to challenge the status quo and to serve the common good.”
The announcement was made on McCain’s 72nd birthday and the 20th anniversary of Palin’s wedding to Todd Palin, a commercial fisherman and production operator in the oil fields of Alaska’s North Slope.
The selection of Palin is an indication that McCain is intent on pursuing the votes of Democratic women who favored New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in the contentious party primary that resulted in the nomination of Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois earlier this week. But Palin’s strong anti-abortion views, which mesh with McCain’s own, may cause many Clinton supporters to shy away.
Mixed Reaction
Geraldine Ferraro, the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 1984 and the only other woman to run for the office on a major-party ticket, praised McCain’s decision in a blog on the FOX News Web site.
“I must say that several months ago I said that it would be great if there was a woman on the ticket — that I felt that John McCain would have to pick someone, especially if Hillary was the nominee,” Ferraro wrote. “But without Hillary being the nominee, it’s really quite equally as important because people are looking for a smart campaign and I think this might do it.”
But other Democrats portrayed Palin as a poor choice who undermines McCain’s argument that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is too inexperienced.

“Is this really who the Republican Party wants to be one heartbeat away from the presidency? Given Sarah Palin ’s lack of experience on every front and on nearly every issue, this vice presidential pick doesn’t show judgment: it shows political panic,” said Illinois Rep. Rahm Emanuel , the chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.
Sen. Barbara Boxer , D-Calif., said such a choice was “dangerous,” and added, “If John McCain thought that choosing Sarah Palin would attract Hillary Clinton voters, he is badly mistaken. The only similarity between her and Hillary Clinton is that they are both women. On the issues, they could not be further apart.”
The pick was hailed by conservatives, who have never been entirely comfortable with McCain and were worried that he might choose a running mate who supports abortion rights.
“I predict any conservatives who have been lukewarm thus far in their support of the McCain candidacy will work their hearts out between now and November for the McCain-Palin ticket,” said David Keene, the chairman of the American Conservative Union.
Conservative Appeal
A strong supporter of the National Rifle Association, Palin favors gun rights and drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
“How could you go wrong with a moose-burger eating, ice-fishing governor? Alaska’s got to be the single most pro-gun state in the country. So I think NRA members and gun owners are going to be very excited about her addition to the ticket,” Sandra Froman, the immediate past president of the National Rifle Association, said on a conference call in which the leaders of a range of conservative groups hailed the decision.
However, none of those leaders could vouch for her skills as a debater against Democratic vice presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden Jr. , because none could say they had heard her debate.
“The good news on Sarah Palin is that she ran in a Republican primary on the tax and spending issues against Republicans who had been too willing to raise taxes and too willing to spend money,” said Grover Norquist, head of the anti-tax Americans for Tax Reform.
Republicans have been hammering away on energy issues all summer, assailing Democrats in Congress for blocking votes on proposals to allow oil and gas drilling offshore and on public lands now closed to exploration.
Two days ago, Palin signed legislation paving the way for construction of a huge pipeline to bring natural gas across Alaska and Canada to the lower 48. Her strong support for domestic energy development can help Republicans press their attack on Democrats who have been wary of the environmental impact of more drilling.
Alaska Politics
Palin has been riding a wave of popularity locally after pushing through $1,200 per person payments to help Alaskans deal with high oil and gas prices.

According to the polling company Rasmussen Reports, she gets good or excellent ratings from 64 percent of voters statewide.
Palin ran on a pledge to reform Alaska and has turned a cold shoulder to Republicans involved in scandals.
The Associated Press has reported that the in 2005, before she became governor, the Palin family accused trooper Mike Wooten, her former brother-in-law, of drinking a beer while in his patrol car, illegal hunting and firing a Taser at his 11-year-old stepson, and that Wooten later served a five-day suspension.
The AP said Attorney General Talis Colberg has found that 14 members of the Palin administration made calls to Department of Public Safety officials about Wooten. Palin said Aug. 27 that none of the two dozen or so calls were made at her direction.
Palin, a commercial fishing operator and sports reporter earlier in her career, is from Wasilla, a community about 45 miles from Anchorage that had a 2004 population of about 7,700. She served on the Wasilla City Council from 1992 to 1996 and as Wasilla mayor for the following four years.
She made an unsuccessful 2002 bid for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor, and then served on the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in 2003-04.
Two years ago, Palin unseated then-Gov. Frank Murkowski in the GOP primary and then beat former Democratic Gov. Tony Knowles in the 2006 general.
She endorsed her lieutenant governor, Sean Parnell, in a race against longtime Rep. Don Young , who is connected to a state corruption scandal. Young narrowly led Parnell in the primary, according to incomplete and unofficial returns. A final vote outcome will not be determined until Sept. 5 when absentee votes are counted.
If the McCain ticket wins in November, Palin will be succeeded by Parnell, who will in turn be succeeded by state Attorney General Talis Colberg. If Parnell wins election to the House, Colberg will become acting governor until a special election is held.
Palin and Parnell raised more than $1.5 million for their 2006 election, according to data from the National Institute of Money and State Politics, a nonpartisan nonprofit that tracks campaign donations to state-level candidates. Civil servants, health professionals, lawyers and lobbyists were listed as the leading categories of donors.
Democratic presidential candidates have effectively ceded the state of Alaska in recent elections. Voters there last supported a Democrat for president in 1964. But Obama indicated early on that he wouldn’t overlook Alaska this cycle, opening offices in the state and discussing a campaign stop.
After Friday’s announcement, Anchorage pollster Ivan Moore said, “The Obama campaign, if they’re realistic, will probably be packing up their stuff and leaving the state.”
George W. Bush won Alaska by 26 points in 2004 and 31 points in 2000.

But McCain had weaknesses, at least before the Palin pick, that were unusual for a GOP nominee, including his opposition to oil drilling in ANWR and his singling out of “the Bridge to Nowhere” as the leading example of wasteful government spending.
In the Alaska Republican caucuses on Feb. 5, McCain finished fourth with 16 percent; former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won the state with 44 percent of the vote.
Palin’s selection is both a move to claim Alaska for the GOP ticket and an indication that McCain intends to try to court women who supported Clinton in the Democratic primary.
“He wants to run as change candidate and get Hillary supporters,” Democratic Rep. Doris Matsui of California said.
In a preview of the back-and-forth yet to come, Sen. Jim DeMint , R-S.C., issued a statement arguing that the Democratic ticket of Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden Jr. will not measure up to McCain-Palin.
“Both McCain and Palin are known for their achievements. Obama and Biden are known for their smooth talk. Americans know that talk is cheap. McCain-Palin is a winning ticket for Republicans,” DeMint said.
Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., called the choice a “Hail Mary pass.”
“It is a real roll of the dice and shows how John McCain , Karl Rove et al realize what a strong position the Obama-Biden team and Democrats in general are in in this election,” he said.
Rachel Kapochunas, Emily Cadei and Alex Knott in Washington; Bob Benenson and Marc Rehmann in Denver; and Kathleen Hunter in Minneapolis contributed to this story.

John McCain's pick of Sarah Palin is a SOLID one for REAL Conservatives, and announcing the pick today is a strategic masterpiece, knocking out Barack Obama/Joe Biden's after convention euphoria!: http://osi-speaks.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 08/ breaking-news-its-unofficially-official.html#links
Sarah Who? You must be joking? This is the Geraldine A. Ferraro moment for the Republican party. He made a really bad choice...she has not been vetted in the National politics and makes her very much a wild card. Anything could happen now and not likely a good outcome.
It appears to me that he picked Palin for shock value. Once that is over and her lack of credentials are broad to the public eye she will be am albatross not and advantage for McCain. If the Repubs think she will get the HRC votes they must be living in La La land. She is against, abortion, gay rights , in favor of drilling in Anwar and sold some important Alaskan natural resources to foreign companies. McCain Rovian tactics are interesting but quite transparent...
"Sen. Barbara Boxer , D-Calif., said such a choice was "dangerous," and added, "If John McCain thought that choosing Sarah Palin would attract Hillary Clinton voters, he is badly mistaken. " Ummm Barbara dear...I think YOU'RE sadly mistaken. This Hillary supporter is quite happy with the choice and plans to vote for the ticket! McCain did what those cowards the Democrats couldn't bring themselves to do...
Palin likes Obama's energy plan. This was reported on her website however it will probably be removed soon giver her new position.... August 4, 2008, Fairbanks, Alaska - Governor Sarah Palin today responded to the energy plan put forward by the presumptive Democratic nominee for President, Illinois Senator Barack Obama. "I am pleased to see Senator Obama acknowledge the huge potential Alaska's natural gas reserves represent in terms of clean energy and sound jobs," Governor Palin said. "The steps taken by the Alaska State Legislature this past week demonstrate that we are ready, willing and able to supply the energy our nation needs." http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:wbCGTUeD1r0J:www.gov.state.ak.us/news.php%3Fid%3D1384+http://www.gov.state.ak.us/news.php%3Fid%3D1384&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us
Wendy, you are not a democrat. What I am getting from you is that you are voting for John McBush just because he chose a woman for VP. You know perfectly well that he only did this as a photo op. He is trying to kiss up to HRC supporters. John McBush is a sexist, mysoginist idiot. Every vote that he has cast on womens issues has been against women. He does not believe in a woman's right to choose. He does not believe in equal pay for the same jobs. He has called his wife several names. Maybe you should think about voting for who best represents you versus voting for a person because you are blind with rage about HRC not getting the nomination. SIncerely, A male from Arizona
I think that this says more about Rep. D. Matsui, rather than S. Palin, or H. Clinton (Matsui fails to mention huge policy differences):: "'He wants to run as change candidate and get Hillary supporters,' Democratic Rep. Doris Matsui of California said."
Palin inexperienced? Let's see--Obama has a few years in the Senate, but Palin has 14 years experience in government as an executive. (She was a Mayor before becoming Governor.) She is a fantastic choice for the Republicans who will ignite the conservative wing back into action. Obama's choice alienated most of his Party.
I am not a fan of this ticket, not so much because of Palin (who reminds me of Miss Congeniality) but because of McCain. Romney would have given me hope for the future--and for the present, given the state of the economy. I see this as a strategic decision, but not necessarily a wise decision. No doubt it will make life difficult for Obama. Congrats to Sarah. I just prefer Romney.
I like her. Go Sarah! It is not like Obama has any more experience, except a speech he gave in 2004.
What most people don't realize is that Palin has about the same qualifications as former Gov. Howard Dean. The state of Vermont has less people than Alaska and is far less important to our nation economically. Palin is a risky pick and not my first choice, but I think if people are open minded enough to give her a chance to show her capabilities, she will impress them.
I feel sorry for McCain. He knows his real opponent is HISTORY itself. He's no match for it. This pick is a desperate attempt to make history when he knows damn well someone else is destined for that role. Ya think?
I like the republican way. Crowd the world with unwanted babies ( who never end up robbing you 20 yrs later) and kill everything and everyone. I love it! Lets blow up everyone who believes in a different fairytale than us, and bomb the earth until there's nothing left. God wants us to do it! It says so in the bible! Didn't you read it??
I may be out of place here (although I have a conservative background) because I'm an Alaskan Obama supporter this time. That being said, the governor of Alaska probably has as much foreign policy experience as Senator Obama. No doubt he is much more well read on the issues. Governor Palin has also been the executive of a state with a several billion dollar annual budget for two years and has a college degree. About as much as the other two in terms of education. While her executive experience isn't deep neither are any of the other candidates, this is where she clearly leads the pack. It is offensive to me that she is being dismissed because of her light foreign policy credentials. Should she be elected vice-President, she'll have time to acquire some more in-depth experience.
