Memorial services for Rep. Walter Jones will be held Thursday in Greenville, North Carolina, his office announced Monday.
Jones died Sunday on his 76th birthday.
Services will be held Thursday, Feb. 14, at 1:30 p.m., and are open to the public. A private family burial will follow.
Jones represented North Carolina’s 3rd District — including the Outer Banks and several military installations — for 24 years. He was remembered by colleagues like Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., for his dedication to drawing down U.S. military commitments.
Jones was raised Baptist. But he converted to Catholicism when at age 31, and remained devout throughout his life. He spoke about his opposition to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in moral terms.
Services will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church — Jones’ longtime parish.
Each week the congressman was in his district, Jones attended the 5 p.m. Saturday Mass there. He always sat in the back pew, according to a 2006 Mother Jones profile.
