Poll: Hunter Maintains Wide Lead Despite Federal Investigation

Despite facing a federal investigation into questionable campaign spending, a new poll shows Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter holds a significant lead ahead of California’s 50th District June 5 primary.

The San Diego Union-Tribune and 10News poll showed 43 percent of respondents support Hunter. The closest competitor, former Obama administration staffer Ammar Campa-Najjar, had the support of 10 percent.

Embattled California Rep. Duncan Hunter is trying to set up a legal expense fund as he faces a federal criminal investigation for misuse of campaign dollars.

The legal defense fund would allow people to contribute more than the limits set for campaign contributions, the San Diego-Union Tribune reported.

After two consecutive weak fundraising quarters, embattled California Rep. Duncan Hunter finally posted a fundraising quarter in which he raised more than he spent.

The Republican has been dogged by a federal criminal investigation about spending campaign finance cash for personal use.

With Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter facing legal troubles, Democrats running in California’s 50th District are increasingly hopeful about picking up a reliably GOP seat.

Hunter won his previous elections in the district by high double digits, beginning in 2008, when he succeeded his father, who served in Congress for almost three decades. President Donald Trump carried Hunter’s district by 15 points in 2016.

Amid an investigation into his spending of campaign cash, California Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter spent more on legal fees than he raised last quarter.

According to California Target Book’s Rob Pyers, who follows campaign finance reports, Hunter raised only $50,000 between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31 last year.

Embattled California Rep. Duncan Hunter spent more in the most recent fundraising quarter on legal fees than he raised.

According to Hunter’s October quarterly fundraising records filed with the Federal Election Commission, Hunter spent roughly $134,000 on legal fees.

Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton raised $600,000 for the Democratic candidates he endorsed in his attempt to recruit more veterans to run for Congress.

The announcement came after a forum at Harvard University, Moulton’s alma mater, with four of the candidates he has endorsed: Dan Feehan in Minnesota’s 1st District, Roger Dean Huffstelter in Virginia’s 5th District, Amy McGrath in Kentucky’s 6th District, and Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey’s 11th District.

California Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter’s Chief of Staff Joe Kasper is leaving his office amid the investigation into the Republican’s use of campaign funds.

Kasper will serve as President Donald Trump’s assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Investigators are looking at California Rep. Duncan Hunter’s use of campaign dollars for personal expenses as far back as 2010.

An investigation by the San Diego Union-Tribune revealed a search warrant obtained last month from federal agents shows their investigation goes back to February 2010 and shows more questionable spending that the campaign has yet to reimburse.
