On paper, neither of Maine's 2nd District candidates fits the district.

They didn't in 2014 either. But in this rematch, when both candidates now have legislative records, Democrats and Republicans are making an effort to point out how just how out-of-touch their opponents are.

LEWISTON, Maine — Emily Cain spoke "un petit peu" French on Thursday. 

The former state House minority leader met with 200 mostly white, older Mainers of French Canadian descent over smothered beef, mashed potatoes and green beans at Lewiston’s Franco Center.

House Majority PAC is on the air Thursday with another ad in Maine's 2nd District.

The hit on Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin by the group, which helps elect Democrats to the House, is part of a more than $700,000 buy in the Portland and Bangor media markets that began on Aug. 12 and will run through Sept. 15.

House Majority PAC will begin airing a positive spot boosting Democrat Emily Cain and her ties to Maine in the state's tossup 2nd District Friday.

The ad, which was obtained first by Roll Call, is part of a $700,000 buy in the Portland and Bangor media markets. Combined with previously reserved airtime for the fall, House Majority PAC is on track to spend north of $1.6 million in the district.

Democrat Emily Cain of Maine raised $543,000 in the second quarter of 2016, according to numbers obtained by Roll Call.  

She ended the period with $1.1 million in the bank for her rematch against Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin in Maine's 2nd District. Seventy-five percent of her quarterly donations came from individuals.

Freshman Republicans who won in 2014 dominate Roll Call's Top 10 List of House incumbents most likely to lose in November.

Elected in low-turnout midterms, they're now on the defensive in districts that often vote Democratic in presidential years.

An internal poll from Democrat Emily Cain's campaign shows her tied with Rep. Bruce Poliquin in Maine's 2nd District.   

Cain and Poliquin, who are facing off for the second time , each garnered 45 percent in the poll conducted by Normington Petts. The live-caller poll surveyed 400 likely voters on landlines and cell phones from June 6 to 9. The margin of error was 4.9 points.

New England's only tossup election got a little more complicated last week, when Maine's Joe Baldacci, the brother of former Gov. John Baldacci, filed to run as a Democrat in the 2nd District.  

Democrats' anointed candidate , former state Sen. Emily Cain, who lost by 5 points to Rep. Bruce Poliquin last November, has been in the race since March .
