Democrat Salud Carbajal will defeat Republican Justin Fareed in California’s 24th District, The Associated Press projects. 

Carbajal led Fareed 55 percent to 45 percent with 67 percent of precincts reporting.

Any time there is a discussion about Republicans taking over a House seat in California, I’m skeptical. That’s a reasonable reaction considering Republicans haven’t taken over a Democratic seat in the Golden State since Bill Clinton was president. But that streak could end this year.

Even though Donald Trump is complicating GOP efforts in House and Senate races across the country, Republicans have two takeover opportunities in California.

Tuesday will be a busy day for congressional candidates, with primaries in four states.  

No matter what, the first GOP incumbent of the year will lose.

Two House Democratic groups are stepping into a California race just weeks before the June 7 top-two primary to make the case that the Republican, an immigrant from Lebanon, is no different from Donald Trump.  

House Majority PAC, an outside group that supports Democrats running for the House, and CHC Bold PAC, the "voice for Latinos in American politics," are going up with a $300,000 media campaign Tuesday in support of Democrat Salud Carbajal and against Republican Katcho Achadjian in the 24th District.
