House Republicans may soon take action to condemn or punish Democrats for breaking House rules during a June sit-in on the floor to protest gun violence, but Democrats are not fretting about it, House Minority Leader Steny H. Hoyer said Tuesday. 

"I don't know what they're investigating, but in any event, I don't think we're worried," the Maryland Democrat said.

The stalemate between Republicans and Democrats in the House over gun control persists despite a private Tuesday night meeting between Speaker Paul D. Ryan and Democratic Reps. John Lewis of Georgia and John B. Larson of Connecticut.  

A source familiar with the meeting said Ryan told the two Democrats that their party is winning the public opinion war on gun control, but a Ryan spokesperson denied that the speaker made such a remark.

Democrats Vow to Keep Up the Fight on Gun Control
 

After nearly 26 hours on the House floor demanding a vote on gun control, Democrats emerged from the Capitol to greet crowds of cheering protesters supporting their cause.

“We will continue to insist, to demand, action,” Rep. John Lewis said. “We’re not giving up, we’re not giving in."

Three House Republicans and one Democrat announced Friday the introduction of legislation to prevent individuals on certain terrorist watch lists from purchasing a gun but with an appeals process for denials.   

The bill, identical to a proposal Maine GOP Sen. Susan Collins offered in the upper chamber , is part of a bipartisan, bicameral attempt to find a legislative compromise on restricting terrorists' access to guns following the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, this month that left 49 people dead and 53 others injured.

After House Democrats on Thursday ended their sit-in on the House floor, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi vowed to continue their fight for gun control until they get a vote. 

“Let me be really clear about this: We cannot stop until we get a bill,” the California Democrat said.
