Marine Corps Veteran Mike Gallagher won the Republican primary in Wisconsin's open 8th District Tuesday night.

He carried 73 percent of the vote in the three-way primary, with just 29 percent of precincts reporting, according to the Associated Press.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's independent expenditure arm has made a $730,000 television ad reservation in Wisconsin's 8th District for October.  

In April, House Majority PAC reserved $220,000 in TV time for the final stretch of the 2016 campaign in the same Green Bay media market.

Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson has announced his candidacy , giving Democrats their preferred choice for picking up retiring GOP Rep. Reid Ribble’s open seat in Wisconsin’s 8th District.  

In an initial analysis of the race in the Feb. 5 issue of The Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report , GOP sources admitted that Nelson would be a formidable foe. And the competitive nature of the district and potential drag from the top of the ticket — likely from either Donald Trump or Texas Sen. Ted Cruz — puts this race firmly into play.
