Democratic Congressional Winning Streak Continues, This Time in Mississippi
By Rachel Kapochunas, CQ Staff
Democrat Travis W. Childers , Prentiss County Chancery Clerk, prevailed in Tuesday’s election in Mississippi’s open 1st District, a seat formerly held by Republican Roger Wicker . With 81 percent of the precincts reporting, Childers had 51 percent of the vote and Republican Greg Davis, mayor of Southaven, had 49 percent. The 1st District gave President Bush 62 percent of the vote in 2004. Democrats believe Childers’ win, combined with two other special elections victories this year - Bill Foster Illinois’ 14th and Don Cazayoux ’s Louisiana’s 6th - spells trouble for Republicans in November. All three seats were formerly held by Republicans.
