Political Trivia for Nov. 12
By Bob Benenson
What was the highest vote percentage this year for a U.S. Senate candidate?
a) 73 percent
b) 76 percent
c) 79 percent
d) 83 percent
Answer: c) Arkansas Democrat Mark Pryor won a second Senate term with 79 percent of the vote and most counties reporting. Pryor’s re-election was assured when the Republican Party failed to field a candidate to run against him. But he did draw opposition from Green Party nominee Rebekah Kennedy, who had 21 percent of the vote.
Wyoming Republican incumbent Michael B. Enzi had the next best showing, winning a third term by taking 76 percent to 24 percent for Democratic college instructor Christopher Rothfuss.
Three incumbent senators each had 73 percent in unofficial returns. One is interim Wyoming Republican Sen. John Barrasso , who was appointed in June 2007 to fill a vacant seat; he defeated Democratic lawyer Nicholas Carter to fill out the final four years of the late Republican Craig Thomas ’ unexpired term. The other two are Democrats: Montana’s Max Baucus , chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, who won a sixth term by trouncing Republican nominee Bob Kelleher, a frequent candidate, and Rhode Island’s Jack Reed , who won a third term by defeating Republican Bob Tingle, a casino pit boss.
