Labor and Green Groups Launch Effort for Stimulus
A host of national unions and other progressive groups launched an initiative Thursday to lobby for quick passage of a near-trillion-dollar economic stimulus package being proposed by congressional leaders and the Obama administration — no matter what the final product includes.
The association — calling itself the Campaign for Jobs and Economic Recovery Now — comprises such diverse organizations as the Service Employees International Union, the Sierra Club, and the Economic Policy Institute. Each is currently lobbying for special projects and considerations to be included in the final bill. As a whole, the group is pledging to pool about $5 million on a media blitz between now and January 20, to ensure there is a completed bill to greet President Obama when he takes office.
“This campaign is concerned with one thing, and that is passing the Obama jobs and economic recovery plan as soon as possible . . . so that our congressional leaders do not have to spend any more political capital than necessary on a problem that was created by our outgoing president and our economy,” said Brad Woodhouse, president of Americans United for Change. “That’s why we’re getting started today before we’ve seen the final elements of a package.”
Woodhouse said efforts would focus specifically on trying to create a majority that could overcome a filibuster in the Senate. Part of the strategy, he said, will be creating a supermajority of moderate Republicans and Blue Dogs along with other Democrats in the House first — in the hopes that it might create momentum to push through the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster threshold.
