Veterans’ Health Bill May Slip to Next Week
Continuing objections by an Oklahoma Republican could block a pre-Veterans’ Day vote on legislation designed to provide new support to those who care for severely wounded veterans.
The wide-ranging Senate bill focuses on caregivers of veterans injured in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. It would provide caregivers with health care, counseling, support and a stipend. The legislation would also expand services in rural areas and ensure that veterans who are catastrophically disabled or who need emergency care in the community are not charged for those services.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid , D‑Nev., said he would file for cloture Tuesday to limit debate if Tom Coburn , R-Okla., continues to block his efforts to bring the bill up and pass it quickly. If that happens, a vote to cut off debate on the bill would not come until next week, when the Senate returns from the Veterans’ Day recess.
Daniel K. Akaka , D-Hawaii, chairman of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, has tried to get a deal to bring the bill to the floor. Tom Coburn , R-Okla., said Monday that he objects to the bill because its five-year, $3.7 billion cost is not offset.
Akaka said Coburn was offered an hour of debate with six amendments, three on each side, but “he even rejected that.”
Coburn communications director John Hart said Coburn has provided a list of programs that could be cut to pay for the omnibus.
Reid said he could not comprehend “the illogic” of Coburn supporting supplemental spending for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that was not offset but opposing legislation that would fund care for the veterans of those wars.
Coburn’s press secretary Don Tatro pointed out that Coburn supported only the first supplemental war measure but voted against subsequent ones for the same reason he is blocking the veterans’ measure: The bills would increase spending without offsets.
“This is about prioritizing spending,” Tatro said.

So according to Coburn's press secretary "This is about prioritising spending" right? In which case what Senator Coburn is saying is that the care for the veterans of wars he voted to authorise (making him a war criminal like Bush) is not a priority. That tells us everything we need to know about both Tom Coburn and the Republican Party. Evil to the core.
