Politics in America District Profile
Taking in numerous cities in the south Puget Sound region, the 9th runs south of Seattle along Interstate 5 before picking up small parts of Tacoma and Olympia, the state capital, en route to rural areas that offer spectacular views of Mount Rainier’s 14,410-foot peak (in the 8th).
Just south of the Seattle city line, the 9th’s northern end takes in predominantly middle-class King County suburbs, where half of its population lives. This area includes most of Burien, SeaTac and Tukwila (shared with the 7th) and Renton (shared with the 8th). SeaTac, named after the area’s major cities, includes the region’s major airport and is home to Alaska Airlines’ corporate headquarters. Boeing has a commercial airplane production facility in Renton, where the 737 jet plane is built. The wealthiest areas are in southern King, including Federal Way, where timber giant Weyerhaeuser is headquartered.
South of King, Pierce County’s suburbs account for 40 percent of the 9th’s population and Thurston County makes up the rest. Pierce County also includes the deep-water Port of Tacoma, which has diversified the area’s economy and helped it become a magnet for technology companies looking for fast distribution opportunities. Thurston includes part of Olympia (shared with the 3rd) as well as the most rural portion of the district.
The 9th is politically ambivalent, giving John Kerry 53 percent of the vote in the 2004 presidential election. Democrats fare better in the King and Thurston portions of the district than they fare in Pierce. The blue-collar workers from Boeing and Tacoma’s port form a Democratic base throughout the district, while fiscally conservative suburbanites tend to vote Republican.
