Giuliani to Deliver Keynote at GOP Convention
By Jonathan Allen, CQ Staff
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani will deliver the keynote address at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday, Sept. 2, Republican Party and McCain campaign officials said Wednesday.
Giuliani, who endorsed presumed Republican presidential nominee John McCain immediately after dropping out of the party primaries earlier this year, will headline a list of convention speakers released Wednesday that also features Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman , I-Conn., who caucuses with Senate Democrats.
Lieberman will speak on the first day of the convention, along with President George W. Bush , Vice President Dick Cheney , First Lady Laura Bush and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger . The theme for the first night of the convention is “Service,” followed by “Reform,” “Prosperity” and “Peace” on the ensuing nights.
McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam and the top Republican on the Armed Services Committee, will give his acceptance speech under the “Peace” theme on the final night.
Most of the officials frequently mentioned as possible McCain running mates have been assigned speaking roles for the convention, though plans can always change.
The Tuesday night “Reform” lineup headed by Giuliani also features two other onetime McCain rivals, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee.
Former Pennsylvania Gov. and Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin , Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle , Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. , former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele -- the only African American among the announced speakers -- and former Treasury secretary Rosario Marin round out the Tuesday night roster.
A pair of top women business executives, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and e-Bay founder Meg Whitman are among the speakers for “Prosperity” night. They are scheduled to share the spotlight with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal , McCain’s wife, Cindy, and host state Sen. Norm Coleman , as well as the party’s unnamed vice presidential nominee.
While most of those rumored to have been in contention for the slot are on the list of speakers released Wednesday, the lineup could be rearranged if one of them became McCain’s running mate. At least one candidate often mentioned for the ticket, former White House Budget Director Rob Portman of Ohio, is not on the list. Portman plans to attend a Dayton, Ohio, event with McCain the day after the Democratic convention ends -- and Politico reported that McCain is expected to unveil the vice presidential nominee that day.
But sources close to Portman caution not to read anything into his attendance at the event.
“Whenever McCain’s in Ohio, Rob wants to do whatever he can to help,” said Rob Lehman, who was a top aide to Portman at the Office of Management and Budget, when Portman served as U.S. trade representative and when he was a congressman from Cincinnati.
In addition to McCain, the slate of speakers for the final night of the convention includes, Gov. Charlie Crist and Sen. Mel Martinez , both of Florida, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback .

The Republicans did it again. They are allowing Thompson and Giuliani two of the biggest losers during the primary season speak during the convention but no Ron Paul. Another love fest about the guy who would make a great president. Give me a break. Go Bob Barr!!!!!!
