A Guide to People You Want to See And Places You Want to Be in Denver
By Lydia Gensheimer, CQ Staff
Poker is hot these days, and a tournament Tuesday night at Coors Field hosted by the Poker Players Alliance will be a big draw.
Throw a few names like Ben Affleck, Seth Meyers, Paul Rudd and Sarah Silverman into the pot — all are scheduled to attend — and the competition for a spot at one of the tables is likely to be intense.
Professional poker players Andy Bloch, Barry Greenstein and Erik Seidel will join them for the tournament, which begins at 10 p.m.
An RSVP is required to attend, though donations (tax-deductible!) are voluntary. All proceeds will go to the Paralyzed Veterans of America.
Colorado state law bars poker tournaments from awarding prizes based on play. So the grand prize, which had been an entry to the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event — valued at $10,000 — had to be scrapped. Instead, a couple hundred door prizes will be given away.
Hey, it’s more democratic that way.
• The Grammys “Rock the Conventions” bash will feature performances by the most popular American Idol loser ever, Daughtry, along with ‘90s alternative stalwart Everclear and local act Flobots.
In a statement, the chart-topping Denver-based band Flobots said they wanted to celebrate the fact that a “progressive African-American candidate running a grass-roots campaign on an anti-war platform” was at the top of a major party ticket.
The concert, which kicks off at 10 p.m. and lasts until 2 a.m., will be held at The Church.
And yes, that’s a nightclub.
• Ashanti and Idina Menzel will attend the “Every Woman Counts” event hosted by Lifetime, Rock the Vote and White House Black Market.
“I use my voice to empower women,” Ashanti, whose family was involved in the civil rights movement, said in a statement.
And speaking of distinctive voices, Fran Drescher is also expected to attend.

The evening is intended to celebrate women in politics and encourage women to vote. It’s probably safe to assume the venue wasn’t picked for its name: The 10 p.m. event will be held at the Cowboy Lounge.
• Gay rights activist Melissa Etheridge, along with Cyndi Lauper, Thelma Houston and Rufus Wainwright, will perform at a “Rock to Win” concert sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign, which lobbies for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equal rights. The comedian Margaret Cho will be a special guest at the concert, which will be held at the Fillmore Auditorium.
