Political highlights: Democratic nominee for U.S. House, 2006
Massa, a retired Navy man, a former Republican and a former adviser to retired Gen. Wesley K. Clark, brings a long r??sum?? in military policy and foreign affairs to the House, where he served briefly on the staff of the Armed Services Committee in the run-up to the Iraq War.
He wrote reports critical of the Bush administration’s Iraq decisions before leaving the committee — and the GOP — to join Clark’s 2004 Democratic presidential campaign. Massa says he decided to run for office the day after President Bush was re-elected in 2004.
The “surge” strategy in Iraq has been unsuccessful, he says, in that it has not allowed a significant redeployment of troops. He has called for a political settlement to separate the warring parties, likening the situation to Bosnia’s.
111th House Freshmen: Eric Massa, D-N.Y. (29)
He retired from the Navy in 2001 after a diagnosis of terminal non-Hodgkins lymphoma and underwent active treatment. While in follow-up treatment, he worked at Corning Inc. and then on the House panel, commuting from New York. Massa says the experience convinced him that the health care system needs a massive overhaul.
His committee interests include Armed Services, Veterans’ Affairs and Agriculture — a panel that would allow him to deliver for his farm-heavy district. He also says that the recent financial industry bailout was a rush in “the wrong direction,” that abortions should be “safe, legal and above all, rare,” and that the nation needs an “Apollo Project” for energy independence.

I'm glad this guy supported the presidential campaign of Wesley Clark, who I favored over Biden as Obama's running mate.
