It was an unusual announcement — in a column today on the op-ed page of the Los Angeles Times. But it is true. Rep. Linda T. Sánchez is expecting a baby in May.

“I’m very blessed — I have a job that I love, a committed partner, and family who love and support me, and the baby on the way,” the California Democrat said in a statement this afternoon.

Sanchez, who is at the moment single, told a reporter earlier that she does plan to wed the baby’s father, but has not yet set a date. Her partner? She didn’t mention him in her statement, but the Times column identified him as Jim Sullivan, a government and public relations consultant.

Sanchez was just elected to a fourth term.
