Campaign Fashions Are in This Season
By Alex Knott, CQ Staff
A Washington watchdog group says Sarah Palin ’s infamous $150,000 shopping spree was not unique. Several other federal candidates have used their campaign funds to purchase clothing as well, leading the nonprofit to file another complaint with the Federal Election Commission.
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington alleges in a letter sent to the FEC today that congressional and White House candidates improperly spent campaign money on clothes. The group filed a similar complaint against former GOP vice presidential candidate Palin and the Republican National Committee in late October specifically citing FEC rules that prohibit certain contributions from being used to buy such things as clothing.
Palin reportedly spent thousands in campaign funds on extravagant purchases from Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. The spending cited in today’s complaint from CREW, however, probably wouldn’t come close to qualifying as extravagant. The purchases by congressional candidates ranged from about $300 to $1000.
Among those cited in the CREW letter: Rep. Loretta Sanchez , D-Calif., $334; Rep. Robert E. Andrews , D-N.J., $952; Utah Republican candidate Bill Dew, $1,089; North Carolina Republican candidate Will Breazeale, $1,000; and Andrew MacPherson, a campaign aide to Bob Barr‘s 2008 presidential campaign committee, $500.
The FEC, as a matter of course, usually reviews each complaint it receives to determine whether an inquiry is warranted. If an investigation is authorized, it’s usually kept confidential until the commission approves a final report and any fines.
