McDonnell Bests All Three Dem Hopefuls in Virginia Governor Race
Two polls today agree that former DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe holds the lead in the race for the Democratic nomination for governor in Virginia, but they diverge sharply on the fortunes of state Sen. Creigh Deeds. But whatever the pecking order, all three are running behind former Attorney General Bob McDonnell in general election match-ups.
A SurveyUSA poll, released earlier today, had McAuliffe leading Deeds 37 percent to 26 percent with former Virginia House member Brian Moran running third at 22 percent. The pollster emphasized, though, that McAuliffe’s and Moran’s numbers were flat since its last poll, while Deeds was showing momentum.
But a Research 2000 poll, while also having McAuliffe in the lead with 36 percent, had Moran at 22 percent Deeds at 13 percent and 29 percent undecided. The poll was conducted May 18-20 and had a 4 point margin of error.
None of the three have particularly good favorable-to-unfavorable numbers. Moran is seen unfavorably by 36 percent compared to 35 percent who view him positively, with 29 percent expressing no opinion; McAuliffe is viewed unfavorably by 40 percent, favorably by 37 percent and 23 percent have no opinion; and Deeds is viewed unfavorably by 36 percent and favorably by 35 percent with 29 percent having no opinion.
For the general election, Research 2000 matched all three against McDonnell and had McDonnell besting all three Democrats. He led McAuliffe 44 percent to 34 percent with 22 percent undecided, Moran by 42 percent to 35 percent with 23 percent undecided and Deeds by 45 percent to 32 percent with 23 percent undecided.
