Party Money: RNC Outpaces DNC in Latest Filings
By Greg Giroux, CQ Staff
The Republican National Committee (RNC) raised $5.8 million in April and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) raised $4.5 million, according to campaign finance reports that both national party committees filed Wednesday.
Though it is the opposition party, the RNC has outpaced the DNC in campaign contributions in the first four months of this year. The RNC raised $31 million in the first third of 2009, compared to $22.3 million for the DNC.
The RNC has raised slightly less than the $33 million it took in for the first third of 2007 and significantly less than the $44.7 million it raised in the first third of 2005, when the Republican Party controlled the White House and both houses of Congress. The DNC raised more in the first third of 2009 than during a comparable period in 2007 ($19.7 million) or 2005 ($21 million).
The RNC last month received the maximum $30,400 contribution from five donors, including former Univision chief executive officer Jerry Perenchio and his wife. Perenchio raised money for John McCain ’s 2008 presidential campaign.
The DNC received the maximum $30,400 contribution from 21 donors last month. They included Maurice Marciano, the chairman of the board of Guess Inc.
