Filibuster Threatened Over Detainee Photos
By Greg Vadala, CQ Staff
Sens. Joseph I. Lieberman and Lindsey Graham said Tuesday they would filibuster the supplemental spending bill unless it includes a provision blocking the release of detainee photographs.
“We’re not going to do anymore business in the Senate. Nothing is going forward until we get this right,” threatened Graham, R- S.C.
The Senate adopted the prohibition as an amendment to its version of the bill (
“To release the photos, to me, is sheer voyeurism. It’s disclosure without a purpose and it’s disclosure that brings great risk,” said Lieberman, I-Conn.
Graham called the House Democrats objecting to the provision “a fringe element.”
“I want the American people to know that if this batch of photos sees the light of day, some American soldier or diplomat is going to lose their life directly related to the violence that would be incited by our enemies by the release of these photos,” he said.
Lieberman and Graham added their amendment — which would bar for three years the disclosure of images of mistreated prisoners taken from Sept. 11, 2001, to Jan. 22, 2009 — to the tobacco regulation bill (
“Sen. Graham and I will not go quietly into the night,” said Lieberman. “We will use all of the legislative tools at our disposal . . . We’re going to take every action and any action we can to make sure that this amendment is adopted.”

Stop or I'll shoot the hostage! Mr. Lieberman, you have the gun to your own head... That's right, and if you don't want to see him hurt you'll do as I day! Fringe element, all right...
