South Carolina Governor Admits Argentinian Affair
By Jonathan Allen and Emily Cadei, CQ Staff
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford admitted Wednesday to having an affair with an unidentified Argentinian woman, making him the second prominent Republican in eight days to make such a confession.
“I’ve been unfaithful to my wife,” Sanford said at a news conference in Columbia, S.C. “I’ve spent the last five days of mine crying in Argentina.”
He apologized to his wife, his children, his staff and “people of faith” across the country.
“There are moral absolutes,” he said, referring to “God’s law” as a protection for man against his own wants.
Sanford’s announcement put to rest some, but not all, of the mystery surrounding his nearly weeklong disappearance from the state — a period during which his staff told reporters he was hiking the Appalachian Trail when he was actually in Buenos Aires.
The governor’s confession gives him something else in common with Sen. John Ensign .
The Nevada Republican, who like Sanford appeared to harbor presidential ambitions, told reporters on June 16 that he had a monthslong affair with a woman who was both a campaign aide and a family friend.
Sanford and Ensign are part of a secretive Christian fellowship on Capitol Hill, known as “C Street” for its location, that meets on Tuesday nights, according to sources familiar with the group’s activities.
Sanford said that he had been consulting with the group for months as he and his wife have tried to work through the affair.
Rep. Mike Doyle , D-Pa., a member of the “C Street” group said Wednesday that he would not discuss it.
Sanford resigned his chairmanship of the Republican Governors Association. He was replaced in that post by another potential Republican presidential hopeful, Gov. Haley Barbour of Mississippi.
He did not resign as governor.
In contrast to the way other politicians have handled similar press conferences, Sanford stayed in front of the cameras and answered questions after his announcement.
He said he did not ask any state employees to help him cover up the affair with the woman, whom he said he first met eight years ago. He later developed a romantic relationship with her and his wife became aware of it about five months ago, he said.
Since then, he said, he has sought support from the C Street Group.
Sanford’s term expires in January 2011.

Unbelievable. Another GOP hypocrite and potential 2012 contender is exposed. Coming so soon after Ensign's revelation, I wonder if one of the other GOP contender's (say, Romney's) opposition research team is behind this? Possibly they're torpedoing their rivals early while he lies relatively low, so he slowly becomes the consensus/default candidate by not making any mistakes? The Dems would be more likely to keep this stuff secret until the time when it would have the most impact.
This is why I don't watch the Fox Propaganda Channel or listen to any of the Republican truth twisters & propagandists, many of whom are downright repulsive. People like Mitch McConnell, Newt Gingrich, Lindsey Graham, in addition to numerous other guest commentators on the cable "news" channels. They are all so mean spirited, so cruel and vindictive....they are all so filled with vitriol, such troublemakers who would rather stand in the way of progress for our country than see the Democrats get any credit and the President to succeed. I don't think we'll see any improvement in the mess our country's in until these old fools are kicked to the curb and replaced by some fresh blood who sincerely want to achieve the best for our country regardless of the party or their personal politics. Good luck to us, I say.....
One crucial (i.e. functional) difference between Sanford and Ensign: As CHIEF EXECUTIVE (of a state) the former was/is obligated to be in contact at all times; if he knew that he would be unreachable for any significant length of time -whether for surgery, tryst, or other- he was at least ethically duty-bound to relinquish the powers and duties of his office to the lieutenant governor. Enough said!
