Strong Grassroots Support For Palin’s SarahPAC
By Rachel Kapochunas, CQ Staff
The political action committee associated with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin , SarahPAC, reported strong support from small donors in its mid-year report.
SarahPAC reported $733,000 in total receipts through June 30, of which $420,000 was “unitemized” or from donors who contributed $200 or less.
The PAC was established in January of this year with a stated goal of supporting Palin’s plans to improve the country as well as candidates who support her ideals.
Palin announced July 3 she will resign as governor later this month and left the door open to possible plans to seek the presidency in 2012.
Palin’s PAC totals put her on par with fellow potential 2012 candidates. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s PAC, Free and Strong America PAC, reported $404,000 raised in the month of May alone, with a combined total of $1.4 million for the first five months of the year.
SarahPAC’s totals did not include any money from political committees or PACs. SarahPAC reported $457,000 on hand.
Only two candidates received contributions from SarahPAC through June 30: Palin’s former running mate, John McCain , received $5,000; and Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski received $5,000. Murkowski on July 3 offered a harsh public criticism of Palin’s decision to resign. The donation to Murkowski was made June 7.
