Duel For Dollars: Republican Party Leads
By Greg Giroux, CQ Staff
The Republican National Committee, the political organization leading the GOP opposition to President Obama’s policies, outperformed the Democratic National Committee in fundraising for the first half of 2009.
The RNC raised $8.9 million in June and $45.7 million for the year, according to a report it filed Monday with the Federal Election Commission. That is slightly less than the $46.4 million the RNC raised in the first half of 2007 and significantly less than the $62 million it raised in the first half of 2005.
The DNC raised $6.8 million in June and $37.4 million for the year-to-date. The DNC has raised more this year than it did over a similar period in 2007 ($28.8 million) or in 2005 ($31.3 million).
Notable RNC donors in June included T. Gary Rogers ($15,000), the chairman of Levi Strauss and Co., and Donald J. Hall Sr. ($15,200), the chairman of the board of Hallmark Cards Inc. One donor gave the maximum $30,400 contribution: Tom Gores, the billionaire founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Platinum Equity.
DNC donors giving the maximum $30,400 included actor Kiefer Sutherland and Kevin S. McClatchey, the chief executive officer of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team.
Jim Carrey, the comedian and actor, gave $20,000 to the DNC, and the director Steven Spielberg gave $15,200.
The campaign reports demonstrated the importance both party committees are placing on the Nov. 3 governor’s election in Virginia, where Democratic state Sen. Creigh Deeds is vying with Republican Bob McDonnell, a former state Attorney General.
The RNC transferred more than $193,000 last month to its state affiliate in Virginia. The DNC transferred $50,000 to its Virginia affiliate and also gave $500,000 directly to Deeds’ campaign. Virginia law does not restrict the size of campaign contributions.
