House Democrats to Talk With Obama About Shared ‘08 Agenda
By Alan K. Ota, CQ Staff
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to begin mapping out a 2008 version of her party’s “Six for ‘06” agenda after Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, meets Tuesday with the House Democratic Caucus.
Pelosi said Thursday she expects caucus members to discuss shared priorities with the Illinois senator as they prepare for the November elections.
She said Democrats have not decided on a name for their 2008 platform (“Eight for 08?”) but she plans to discuss a number of potential priorities with Obama, including increased funding for infrastructure repairs and creation of a cap-and-trade system for carbon emission allowances to fight global warming. Other possibilities include initiatives to strengthen homeland security and proposals designed to provide economic security for middle-class and low-income families.
“We will talk about how to grow our economy, how to create jobs, and how to do it in a fiscally sound way, and how to do it in a way that has many more people participating in the economic security of our country,” Pelosi said. “There are a lot of things we want to do.”
While the Speaker said there are no formal plans to coordinate House campaigns with Obama’s, Democratic leaders will try to develop a common list of priorities to emphasize.
She also vowed to move rapidly in the 111th Congress to advance their shared agenda, if Obama is elected.
“It’s not that there’s coordination so much as there is a shared agenda,” she said. “We have core values that we’ve agreed upon,” Pelosi said, and “a presidential candidate can take them to a higher level from a bigger platform.”
Of Obama, she said, “We want to hear what he will say. But we’ve laying the foundation for this new direction. . . . And we look forward to sharing ideas with him.”
