Political Trivia for Dec. 24
Which U.S House member represents the town of Santa Claus, Indiana?
b) Steve Buyer
d) Mike Pence
Answer: c) The town of Santa Claus is located in Spencer County, Ind., which is in the southwestern corner of the 9th District represented by Democrat Hill.
The town, which has had the name since the mid-1850s, is best known for its post office, which for many years has received tons of mail from children writing letters to Santa Claus — dutifully answered by volunteers known as “Santa’s Elves” — and has processed cards and packages for people who want the Santa Claus postmark. The community also is home to amusement parks keyed to the town’s name, including “Santa’s Candy Castle,” “Frosty’s Fun Center,” and “Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari.”
Spencer County also includes the boyhood home of Abraham Lincoln, prompting the interesting juxtaposition on Spencer County’s logos of a portrait of Lincoln as a young adult alongside a drawing of Santa Claus.
