The far inland region of upcoming primary state South Carolina is known by what term?
a) Upstate
b) Upcountry
c) Downstate
d) Northwest Carolina
Answer: b) The Upcountry, according to a Web site that promotes the region, is made up of six counties in the hilly northwestern part of South Carolina that rim the state’s borders with North Carolina and Georgia.
The region is split among three congressional districts: Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties are in the 3rd District, represented by Republican J. Gresham Barrett ; Greenville and Spartanburg counties are in the 4th District, represented by Republican Bob Inglis ; and Cherokee County is in the 5th District, represented by Democrat John M. Spratt Jr.
The Upcountry is a region to watch in Saturday’s South Carolina Republican presidential primary, as it has long been a Republican Party stronghold. Support for President Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign in the six counties ranged from 64 percent in Spartanburg to 73 percent in Pickens. Bush’s statewide vote share that year was 58 percent.

The area around Greenville and Spartanburg has always been called "Upstate" by people who live there.
I've lived in South Carolina for about 54 of my 57 years, about two of them in that area, and it has always been called Upstate. SDH
It is "Upstate". Try Googling Upstate South Carolina. The "University of South Caraolina Upstate" campus is in Greenville. There is the "low country" adn the "upstate". The major newspaper in the region, the Greenville News, refers to the "Upstate" (www.greenvilleonlilne.com) My son is a Clemson University student and when we visit (Go Tigers!), the media always refers to the Upstate.
