Rep. Fossella Faces Growing Pressure to Resign
Embattled Rep. Vito J. Fossella , R-N.Y., was under growing pressure Thursday to resign after admitting he had fathered a 3-year-old daughter out of wedlock.
Fossella drew little support from House Minority Leader John A. Boehner , R-Ohio, as rumors of Fossella’s possible resignation swept Capitol Hill.
“I think Mr. Fossella is going to have some decisions to make over the weekend,’’ Boehner said.
Fossella, a five-term member from Staten Island in New York City, was arrested for drunk driving in Alexandria, Va., early May 1. Fossella hinted he intends to serve out the rest of his term, at least for now.
Fossella’s chance of holding onto his seat as the only GOP member from New York City’s five boroughs may have worsened when he admitted that he and Laura Fay, a former Air Force officer who is not his wife, have a 3-year-old daughter.
Fossella, 43, and his wife, Mary Pat, have three children of their own.
“I have had a relationship with Laura Fay, with whom I have a 3-year-old daughter,’’ Fossella said. “My personal failings and imperfections have caused enormous pain to the people I love, and I am truly sorry. While I understand that there will be many questions, including those about my political future, making any political decisions right now are furthest from my mind.”
While CQ has ranked Fossella’s seat as safe Republican, that could now change.
Even before the scandal broke, Democrats were targeting Fossella in the 2008 election.
