Pro-Clinton 527’s Activities Prompt FEC Disclosure
By Alex Knott, CQ Staff
American Leadership Group (ALG), a pro- Hillary Rodham Clinton 527 group, filed its first disclosure report with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) detailing more than $860,000 spent largely in Texas and Ohio right before their Tuesday primaries. A 527 group can raise unlimited funds and must report to the IRS, however, the group is not required to file with the FEC unless it runs ads identifying federal candidates during the crucial days before a primary or general election.
ALG raised almost $1.2 million during the last two weeks including $1,000,000 from the labor union American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and individual donors who gave as much as $50,000 each. The 527’s ads have stirred debate about the line between genuine issue ads and candidate advocacy in light of recent changes to campaign finance laws.
