House Stands Down on Women in the Draft

After the Senate Armed Services Committee approved a provision in the defense authorization bill that would require women to register for the draft, the Rules Committee watered down the language of the House version of the bill, downgrading that requirement to a mere study.

While most Democrats were expected to vote in favor of adding women to the draft, many Republicans voiced opposition. Sen. Ted Cruz even suggested supporters of the measure were “nuts.”

House Extends TAA Reconsideration Period Through July 30
Language attached to rule governing debate for fiscal 2016 intelligence authorization bill.

The House voted 236-189 on Tuesday to extend the House’s ability to reconsider last week’s failed vote on Trade Adjustment Assistance legislation through July 30.

The Rules Committee on Monday evening added TAA reconsideration language to its rule governing floor debate for an unrelated measure: the fiscal 2016 authorization of intelligence programs.
