White House: No Timeline on Gitmo Closure Plan
 

Following CQ Roll Call’s exclusive interview with Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work, who said he expected the White House submit a plan to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, within the next month, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said the administration has no timetable for when it will present a proposal to Congress.

“I think the chief bottleneck is Congress,” Earnest said. “We have seen Congress pass legislation that they put in place intentionally and specifically to make closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay much more difficult.”

Senate Adopts Amendment Banning Torture
 

In a wide 78-21 vote, the Senate adopted the amendment as it continued consideration of the annual defense authorization legislation. Thirty-two Republicans joined all Democrats to approve the proposal.
